Gamesmaster Podcast
Ibba: Welcome to the Gamesmasters 10-minute podcast! We’re here to discuss.. What are we here to discuss, Carl?
Carl: Massively multiplayer online games versus single player games!
Ibba: Ah. With us are Arvin Tan and Carl Javier. I am Ibba Bernardo. And together we are… the Gamesmasters! Raaawr!
(Laughter)
And we will be discussing the hottest topic. Is it the impeachment process? Rallies on the street? (Nooo) Is it E-VAT? (Nooo) Is it the rise in gas prices? (Of course not) No, it is the one thing on kids and adults and teens and everybody’s minds! What is better?
Carl: The single player game?
Arvin: Or MMOGs, which is Massive Multiplayer Online Games
Ibba: So, well, what’s out there right now? We’re looking at a whole plethora… Plethora, that’s a big word. That means many.
(Chuckles)
Like massive. So, a whole plethora of games out there that have just hit our shores, right? We’re looking at Ragnarok. We’re looking at Tantra. We’re looking at Khan. We’re looking at a whole bunch of Flyff. I mean, there’s a whole bunch of new games out there that just, talaga, are driving parents and kids crazy. What have you guys played? Arvin?
Arvin: I’ve played RO (Ragnarok Online). I’ve played Tantra. I’ve played FFXI (Final Fantasy 11), World of Warcraft. And right now I’m actually doing RF Online
Ibba: So, how long have you been addicted to online games?
Arvin: Sadly, I have no life for three years already.
Ibba: That’s tough. What got you started? Was there a gateway game?
Arvin: Umm, yeah. I got into this when a few friends of mine invited me to play RO, which was basically the end of ’93, was it? Yeah. I can’t really remember any more. I haven’t seen the light of day [since then].
Ibba: Okay, so, what got you into it? Single player games were around before then. I mean, did you play those a lot?
Arvin: Yeah, I did. I used to. Of course.
Ibba: What was the last single player game you played?
Arvin: Super Robot Wars Alpha.
(Laughter)
Ibba: What a geek! So ever since then, you’ve been playing online games?
Arvin: Yeah.
Ibba: Okay, all right. How about you Carl, what online games have you played?
Carl: Well, I’ve not played MMOs, cause I have a life.
(Laughter)
I’ll have some friends over and we’ll, you know, kill each other over Halo 2 but I don’t do the massively multiplayer online thing. It’s not my thing. I’m more of the single player guy. I love endings. And I love the feeling of, you know, completing a game, getting to the end of it, and seeing what the whole point of it was. So I just… I’m not getting that from the massively multiplayer games.
Ibba: So basically that means that Carl believes in God. (Laughter) And Arvin is basically an agnostic. There are many levels to gamers. You can tell [just] by the type of games that they play.
Carl: I believe in a higher order.
Ibba: You believe that you are fated to do something great. And Arvin just wanders around the Earth aimlessly.
Carl: Yes, sadly. Hacking and slashing.
Ibba: Hacking and slashing. Man, the mayhem. Alright, so, what made you decide, aside from having a life that… I mean you didn’t, have you ever tried any games? Online games? MMOGs?
Carl: Yeah, it’s just that they take up too much of my time. You know, I mean..
Ibba: What have you tried?
Carl: I’ve tried Ragnarok when it came out. It’s alright, you know. But when I play games, I’m more into combat systems. I’m more into strategy and stuff.
Not so much into getting the coolest items or leveling up. That’s pretty much the whole point of it, you know. Getting new items and going on…
Ibba: Is that the point of it?
Arvin: But of course! You know, it’s a really great chat program too.
(Laughter)
Carl: But I suppose you can meet maybe two of the three hundred of the possible girls that play out of thousands and thousands.
Ibba: I know, I know the girls Arvin’s met. They’re what we call chicksilogs.
(Laughter) We’ll get into that in a later podcast. Chicksilog hour.
Carl: I suppose we could have a different PG rating.
Ibba: Yeah. Actually, I’ve seen Arvin’s characters. They’re pretty hot.
(More laughter)
Carl: As long as the other gamers don’t see Arvin.
Ibba: Arvin’s pretty hot too. Nice long, black hair. Curvaceous.
Arvin: Very, I tell you.
Ibba: So, you Arvs what do you think? Don’t you want to play single player games at all? I mean there’s a whole bunch of games. Grand Theft Auto [among others]. What are the kick-ass single player games out there now?
Carl: Uh, I’m sacrificing my life for The Warriors right now. Rockstar gives you all these great games.
Arvin: But sadly, I can’t afford the consoles.
Ibba: But you can afford how many [accounts]? How many accounts? How many online monthly payments do you have?
Arvin: I don’t know. I don’t really keep track of it.
Ibba: How much of your money, percentage-wise, goes to online games?
(Silence)
Arvin: Silence means a lot.
Ibba: So, your life basically revolves around that.
Arvin: That’s why I do reviews.
Ibba: How do you earn money off it? Do you enter the dark side? I’ve heard there’s a whole bunch of shady dealings going on. Have you ever made a pretty penny off an online game transaction?
Arvin: Of course I have. Who hasn’t?
Carl: Kunin na ng Level-Up yan!
(Laughter)
Ibba: Well, he didn’t say what game..
Carl: Okay.
Ibba: Yeah, if it was BC… What do you guys think about that? That whole underground economy going? I mean, it is… I don’t know. I’m kind of laissez-faire about it.
Carl: I don’t know, cause I myself I don’t like cheats. So as much as possible, I finish a game no cheats.
Ibba: Exactly, exactly. Un-easy. Or ultra-easy.
Carl: Well, you start off [from the beginning] and then you build your way up.
Ibba: You start off hard and then you end up easy.
(Chuckles)
Arvin: That’s it. MMOGs don’t have cheats.
Carl: No, but I’m saying that you’ve got that item. You didn’t have to work for it. (Arvin: Ahh, yeah, that’s true.) You went and found somebody who had that item and you did that shady deal and you buy it off him. I don’t know…
Ibba: So you think it’s a…
Carl: It’s a bit of a compound. It’s like you’re not a real gamer if you have to go off buy items yourself.
Ibba: But it’s a real. It’s the real world, man. I mean if you look at it, games are trying to emulate real life. And there’s nothing more real life that the capitalist market. Right? Seriously, I think its very capitalist market. You can’t get more real than that right?
Carl: I think that, MMOGs, they promote materialism.
Ibba: Virtual materialism.
Arvin: Materialism!
Carl: Yeah, you know, like I need the newest coat, or something.
Arvin: But I, personally, sell stuff. I need more sockets.
Ibba: So you earn money off it?
Arvin: Yeah, of course.
Ibba: So for the last three years, you’ve been earning money? You’ve been supporting your vice, your addiction.
Carl: Through gaming itself.
Ibba: Through gaming itself?
Ibba: So you get off on your own supply?
Arvin: Yeah, I guess so.
Ibba: That’s the number one rule man. You should never do that. That’s bad. So, aside from losing your life, what are the benefits? I mean there must be benefits out there right?
Arvin: Well, you get to meet friends.
Ibba: Ehh? I do that when I go to the mall, you know, and watch a movie. Cellphones. A bunch of things.
Arvin: I think it precludes not leaving the house.
Ibba: Which is always a benefit. I mean I love not leaving the house.
Do you ever see yourself getting into online games?
Carl: I still need the ending. That’s it. And I need to be working toward something. I can probably play them, but I’d never devote as much time. I mean I’m willing to stay up at till 6 in the morning playing something, or you know, [just as much as] how many hours that I’ve played Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
Ibba: Do you ever see yourself getting into single player games?
Arvin: Again? Yeah, of course. I want to catch up on my Super Robot Wars.
(Pause)
Ibba: And this sucks, we have no ending. This is like an online game. There’s no winning side, cause there’s only three of us.
And that is the Gamesmaster’s podcast.
